Bunratty Castle, Ireland

The Bunratty Castle is a medieval castle located in the centre of Bunratty village about 10 kilometres from Limerick in County Clare, Ireland. The castle was built in 1270 by Robert De Muscegros as a motte and bailey castle which was completely destroyed during the Irish Bruce Wars (1315-1318). The Bunratty Castle was shortly afterwards restored but in 1332 it was dismantled again by the Irish Chieftains of Thomond. In 1425 the present Bunratty Castle was completed by the MacNamara family. Around year 1500 it fell in hands to the one of the most powerful clans in Munster, the O'Briens (through marriage).

The castle suffered a severe damage during the 17th century wars and after being abandoned it fell in ruins. By the middle of the 20th century the castle's condition was in such bad shape that it was in danger of being demolished for stone ( people were taking building material, stone for their own use ). In 1952 the Bunratty Castle was bought for a nominal sum by Viscont Gort who restored it and opened it for the public. The castle also houses the medieval-style banquets which are held twice every evening and are also popular site for marriages. Alongside the Bunratty Castle the Bunratty Folk Park is located which is a vivid reconstruction of the 19th century village.
