Castle of Populonia, Italy
The Castle of Populania known as Rocca of Populonia is a medieval castle located on the hill of the ancient Etruscan Acropoli in Populonia, Tuscany, Italy. The castle was built by Jacopo II Appiani in the 2nd half of the 14th century. At the end of the 15th century was the medieval castle transformed into the military bastioned fortress which had over the next centuries exclusively military function. The Castle of Populonia was restored in the 18th century and is today open to the public. Worth seeing is also a small fourteenth-century village with its two main lanes (San Giovanni di sopra and San Giovanni di sotto) within walls of the castle.
