Castle of Stefan Lazarevic, Serbia
The Castle of Stefan Lazarevic is a medieval castle located within the Belgrade Fortress above the confluence of the Rivers Sava and Danube in the city of Belgrade, Serbia. The castle was built by Despot Stefan Lazarevic about 1405 after he gained the city of Belgrade and served as Despot's residence.
Shortly after his death in 1427 was Belgrade returned to the Hungarians, while Stefan's successor Ðurad Brankovic after the Second Battle of Kosovo in 1448 moved the Serbian capital to Smederevo. The Castle of Stefan Lazarevic fell into decline until it was in 1690 demolished. From the Castle of Stefan Lazarevic today remains only the Despot Stefan Tower that is today used as the entrance to the fortress.
