Durham Castle, England


The Durham Castle a medieval castle located in the city of Durham, County Durham, England. The Durham Castle was built in 1072 soon after Norman Conquest on orders of William the Conqueror. Since the end of 11th century was the castle the seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham who were appointed by the crown to rule in Durham.

The castle was the palace of the Bishops of Durham until 1837 when the Bishops made Bishop Auckland their primary residence and the castle was transformed into an University College which was opened in 1840. Today the Durham Castle still houses the University College and was in 1986 together with Durham Cathedral also inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage sites.
