Glamis Castle, Scotland
The Glamis Castle is a medieval castle located beside the village of Glamis in Angus, Scotland. The castle was built in the 11th century as a royal hunting lounge what clearly indicate records of King Malcolm II who died in the Glamis Castle in 1093. In 1372 was the Glamis Castle granted to Sit John Lyon by Robert II of Scotland and is since then owned by the Earls of Strathmore. In the 16th century was the 14th century three storey keep altered into a five storey L-plan tower house but the present appearance of the Glamis Castle was made after the 17th and 18th century restoration although occasional addition were made until the 20th century.
The Glamis Castle is probably the most famous for being the birthplace and home of Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon (later best known as the Queen Mother) who in 1923 married Prince Albert who later became the King George VI. The Glamis Castle is associated also with many legends and tales like the one of the Monster of Glamis which says that in 19th century was born to the family hideously deformed child who was kept all his life in a hidden room in the castle, while his existence was kept secret. The Glamis Castle is supposedly also hunted by the ghost known as the Grey Lady who is said to be the spirit of Lady Janet Douglas who was burned at the stake in 1537.
