Kasteel de Haar, the Netherlands
The Kasteel de Haar or the Castle De Haar is a medieval castle located in the village of Haarzuilens in the province of Utrecht, the Netherlands. The castle was built in the late 14th century by the Van de Haar family but it was first mentioned in written sources in year 1391. In 1449 the castle passed through marriage to the Van Zuyen family which owned the Castle De Haar until their extinction in the 17th century.
Afterwards was the castle inherited by the Van Stembor family but after the severe damage caused by the French troops in 1672 it fell into neglect. In 1801 the Castle De Haar passed to JJ. van Zuylen van Nijevelt but the castle was by then in ruins. In 1890 the ruined castle passed to Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt who rebuilt it in its present appearance between 1892 and 1912. The Castle De Haar is today still in possession of the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family but it is open to the public except in September when the family uses it.
