The Knights Castle in Rhodes, Greece


The Knights Castle in Rhodes is a medieval castle located in the town of Rhodes on the island Rhodes, Greece. The castle was built by the Knights of Saint John at the beginning of the 14th century.

The Knights Castle in Rhodes became the most important stronghold of the Knights of Saint John in the Greek islands and managed to withstand the attacks of Sultan of Egypt in 1444 and of Mehmed II in 1480. However, in 1522 it could not withstand the forces of Suleiman the Magnificent who conquered the castle which during under the Ottomans used as a powder keg and a prison. In 1856 was the castle almost completely destroyed by an explosion but it was rebuilt during the Italian occupation of the island of Rhodes between 1912 and 1948. The Knights Castle of Rhodes today houses the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes and is open to the public.
